Grant Agreement to Sell Slaves Number of Pages: 4 ----- new page (VMSS352_p001.jpg) Know all men by these presents that I Samuel M Frank, of Jackson County, State of Missouri for and in Consideration of the sum of six hundred, dollars, which amount has been secured to me by Thomas P Shrock of the City of Independence, County and State aforesaid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged to by these presents bargain, sell, transfer assign and deliver unto the said Thomas P Shrock, his executors, administrators and assigns, a negro woman Slave, called and known by the name of Sarah, now about the age of thirty six years, of a dark complexion—also her daughter, a negro girl slave, called and known by the name of Ellen, now about the age of fifteen years, of a dark complexion, also a son of the said Sarah, a negro boy slave, called and known by the name of John Thomas of a dark complexion, together with all my right, title, interest, claim and demand, of, in and to the said three slaves, to have and to hold the said negro slaves, above bargained and sold, or intended so to be, to the said Thomas P Shrock, his executors, administrators and assigns, with these conditions to wit, whenever said slaves, or any person in their behalf, shall well and truly pay unto the said Thomas P Shrock, his executors, admini -strators, or assigns, the full sum of six hundred dollars, together with all interest that may accur on said $600 at the rate of ten per cent per annum, until paid, but should the amount not be paid within four years from this date, then the interest is to cease, then the said slaves are to be free, the said Thomas P Shrock, of the county and state aforesaid, on his part, promises, that whenever said amount of six hundred dollars, together with interest ----- new page (VMSS352_p002.jpg) As aforesaid, shall be paid unto him, his heirs, executors administrators and assigns, that he will amancipate, set free, the said negro woman Sarah, in accordance to, and conditions of, the laws of the State of Missouri—also, when the said negro girl, Ellen shall arrive at the age of Eighteen years, then said Shrock is to emancipate, set free the said Ellen, in accordance to the laws aforesaid, provided the $600 has been paid as aforesaid, if not then said Ellen is to remain under the controll of said Shrock until the said amount ($600) has been paid as aforesaid, also when the said negroe boy John Thomas, shall arrive at the age of twenty one years, then said Shrock is to amancipate , set free, the said John Thomas, according to the laws as aforesaid, and within seven years, next ensuing, the said Shrock is to instruct the said John Thomas in the Brick laying business—and after the expiration of the said seven years, and up to the time when said John Thomas shall arrive at the age of twenty one years, then said Shrock shall allow said John Thomas reasonable wages, which wages shall be paid unto his mother (Sarah) if living, if not then to go to himself after his eman -cipation—but if the $600 as aforesaid be not paid when the said John T. shall arrive at the age of twenty one years, then said negro boy shall remain with, and under the control of said Shrock until the amount is paid as aforesaid, Shrock allowing said boy reasonable wages as aforesaid, and shall pay all expences, as for medical services, and cloths for said boy that may be necessary for said boy during the seven years aforesaid, It is further condition, that any expences that may ----- new page (VMSS352_p003.jpg) Be incured for medical services, or other things for the said Sarah and her daughter Ellen while not labouring for said Shrock, shall be repaid to said Shrock, in addition to the amount ($600) aforesaid; it is further conditioned that should the said Shrock attempt to sell the said slaves in servitude for life, then this instrument is to be null and void, and the said slaves to be absolutely free of said Shrock and further conditioned, that should slave or slaves attempt to escape from the servitude of said Shrock, then such offending slave or slaves shall forfeit his or her right of emancipation and shall be a slave for life, And the said Samuel M Grant for himself, his heirs administrator, executor and assigns, warrant that the said negroes are slaves and are to remain so, until the conditions in the above instrument are complied with as therein stated.
